Cool Way To Increase Your Closet Space

It is possible to create more closet space in your house without having to hire a contractor to move walls. How is that possible? The answer lies in making more effective use of your current space. Most people do not take steps to make the most efficient use of their storage space because they are unaware of the extent of the unused closet space.

If you think about it, a closet is little more than a large storage container that you put things into. The actual real physical capacity of each closet is determined by the height x width x length. If you calculate the volume of a standard 8′ x 6′ x 1 1/2′ closet, you could fit 50 filing boxes. You might be thinking to yourself that there is no way you could imagine fitting 50 boxes worth of stuff into one single closet.

Fifty boxes of stuff is a lot of stuff. You may have only 20 boxes worth of stuff in your closets right now. It would be hard to access anything if your closet was packed 100% full, but by using proper closet organization techniques, you could probably increase your storage capacity from 20 to 30 boxes worth. That is an increase in space of 50% for free.

The first example I will use to help you use your closet space more effectively is comparing using storage bins as opposed to simply throwing things on a shelf. Lets say that a shelf is used for mittens, hats and gloves. If you just throw these things on the shelf, they will probably take up the whole shelf and you can’t really use the shelf for anything else. If you use storage bins to keep your winter wear in, you will be able to put everything in a couple of bins which would probably only take up half or less of your shelf. Now you have the entire other half of your shelf to put more bins on. You have just doubled the size of this shelf.

Another way to maximize the capacity of a closet is to purchase a closet organizer. Closet organizers are generally a combination of different storage components that can be permanently affixed to the inside of your closet. These organizers might include a set of shelves, some drawers, and or/a hanging rod. You can find pre-fabricated closet organizers or you can find modular organizers that allow you to pick and choose the storage components you prefer. Closet organizers can be found at any home renovation store or in many department stores.

It’s time that you started looking at how you organize your closets, and take a serious look at all the empty air that you could be using to store more items. Consider this – if you currently have a shelf and a hanging bar, you could add a second lower hanging bar, a shelf down below, and another shelf up high. In effect you have just doubled the effective size of your closet without having to pay for a closet renovation! Go check out your closets to see how much space you can add today for free.
