Restoring Order to Chaos: Packing Your Belongings in the Proper OrderOctober 5, 2020
Are you a procrastinator, or do you like to wade in and take charge? Do you make mental lists, or do you write everything down? Knowing how you approach projects will help you determine the best way to prioritize your packing and make your move as stress-free as possible.
Your first step should be to clear out anything you don’t plan to take with you. This will help make organizing easier and faster, and prevent you from wasting time and packing materials on items you don’t want to keep. Careful planning at this stage will save a lot of time and headaches later.
Whether you go through each room, packing up books, toys, photos, seasonal items and other nonessentials as you go and leaving the rest, or whether you start with one room and stay in it until everything you don’t need is packed up, the things you’re still using are safely stored elsewhere, and the room is completely empty doesn’t matter, so long as you stay on schedule.
If you have a home office, you will need to carefully consider which equipment, documents, etc. you will need to continue using right up until your move, and which can safely be packed away ahead of time. Make sure to carefully label your home office boxes, so you can resume your regular work habits as soon as you’re in your new place.
Restrict your food shopping to non-perishables starting several weeks before your move, to avoid having to throw out a lot of food. If you’re not moving very far, you can pack things in ice chests, but it’s simpler not to have to move them at all.
Give each family member an overnight bag to keep their daily necessities in until moving day. Make sure that toothbrushes, eyeglasses, prescription medications, cosmetics and anything else used on a daily basis goes back into the bag after each use, to keep things organized and on schedule.
On the day of your move, throw out any trash, take a last look in each room for any stray items, place wet towels in plastic bags, and make sure all of the personal cases are accounted for. Have premade sandwiches for your final meal, or plan to stop at a restaurant. Bid farewell to your old home, and set off to start fresh in your new one.
