The Role of Alcohol and Insomnia

Numerous people think that a few drinks will help them to sleep better when in fact it will help a person fall asleep but it will not help to keep them asleep. Though alcohol may help you fall asleep faster, it can also lead you to have an unsettled night night causing you to feel tired, unsettled, and hardly-focused the next day.

It is in fact the opposite to what most people imagine, that alcohol and insomnia do not mix at all, and having this kind of sleeping behavior can lead to a very unhealthy situation. Unfortunately, consuming too much alcohol causes the body to dehydrate which can make insomnia even worse.

Alcohol results in a person not getting a quality sleep and decrease of deep sleep which can not only spoil the next day. Although it is true that alcohol may help you fall asleep sooner, it dehydrates the body too and this is the method which alcohol and insomnia function. Due to dehydration caused by the alcohol, your body will be thirsty thus, forcing you to wake up therefore keeping you from getting into the most important kind of deep sleep – the REM cycle of sleep. No alcohol will ever alleviate a person’s sleeplessness but in fact will make it worse. It should never be an excuse for a person suffering from insomnia to have a drinking problem just to make it go away.

There are a multitude of other, proven ways to treat insomnia without knocking back a few drinks. To deal with insomnia, you have to know what may have it caused it and although you can do it all by yourself, consulting a doctor is more advisable. A doctor will consider all of the information and get into more depth of what could be creating the trouble. Proper remedies that will be able to treat your insomnia will be provided by your doctor without resorting to drinking alcohol as it won’t be a successful medication. Keep in mind that if you want to get quality sleep at night, drinking alcohol should not be considered as you will only suffer further problems and will make you feel more awful and worn out during the next day.

Consuming alcohol to address insomnia has always been and may be still considered as one of the greatest misconceptions ever. Maybe it is because although a few drinks might in reality cause sleep and make one fall asleep faster it is almost as if the sleep that they are getting does not count. You will not get the right level of sleep and with the other factors of alcohol combined, then technically one might as well have have not gone to bed at all.

As a result, it didn’t help the body or mind at all. It is a fact that, most people who have a dependency on drink have frequent sleep disruptions, even after they stop. In an effort to escape it all, it is naturally hard to recover a normal sleeping pattern therefore leaving you with the lasting struggle to fight insomnia.
